I think one of my favorite things about “The Old Guard” movie, (aside from everything) is that the three dudes of the group are all very friendly and approachable-looking, while Andy, the one girl, looks like she’s about to commit six different felonies at once at any given moment

It’s the worlds’ scariest mother hen and her three soft boys

A thing I really enjoyed about the old guard was that not only is there a total lack of any masculine ego or posturing or drama (or really petty rivalry and drama of any kind within the group), it’s also deliberately presented as a sign of their age and maturity. Like, it doesn’t just lack male ego, it actively frames that as something completely juvenile.

None of the guys question Andy’s role as the leader for even a second, and you get the impression she’s leading them a place of love and wanting to guide and protect them, not, like, boss them around. And the guys are all kind and patient toward Nile, without ever being patronizing, but also don’t question it when she leads everyone in the fight at the end. And of course there’s Joe’s speech calling the homophobic soldiers “infants”.

It’s just such a refreshing and believable take on mostly immortal people that there’s just this warmth and trust and open love between them all because of course after hundreds or thousands of years they would understand how pointless and trivial anything else would be.

“one reason they’ve been such a hit stems from the care marwan kenzari & luca marinelli devoted to the duo.

for example, this moment when the lovers briefly touch heads to check in with one another after joe is stabbed — the actors came up with that!”

A gay Italian character who is not stereotyped.

A gay Arab character who is also not stereotyped.

    Neither of them fetishized.

Both of them bad ass as fuck.

And they’re in one of the healthiest relationships, queer or not, I’ve ever seen in an action movie.

    image

Two female leads, one of them Black, neither of them sexualized.

     Not even ONCE.

Both of them bad ass as fuck.

And they both have space to be their own characters, with their own arcs.

    Directed by a Black woman.

    Edited by a Black woman.

Actual MAIN //obviously// Gay characters in a superhero/comic movie? (Not relegated to cameo status, take notes Marvel!)

I’m sorry I can’t shut up about this movie.

I’m just so fucking INTO everything it’s about!

(Edit: I was too excited to think while I wrote this and but now it’s doing numbers and everyone is yelling at me asking what the name of the movie is lol. It’s The Old Guard, it’s on Netflix and came out a week ago.)

So, here’s something fun about Joe and Nicky’s sleeping habits, in the comics and movie both.

They’re always spooning when we see them asleep and Joe is always the big spoon. That one’s pretty obvious.

But also, Joe always has his back to a wall and/or an ally, while Nicky is in front of him, between Joe and the rest of the world, with a weapon in easy reach.

And when they get woken up by Nile’s nightmare, Joe grabs Nicky’s hip and Nicky grabs a gun.

Just thought I’d put that out there.

nile: so are you the big spoon or the little spoon

    nicky: i’m the little spoon

    joe: he’s the knife

first of all i’d like to say thank you so much not only to god but to jesus for this still frame

secondly the fact that this is their normal everyday sleeping position makes me absurdly happy because look at them. just. look at them. i mean that is an absolutely god-tier cuddle right there. 10/10 snugs. look at that solid body contact, that nose to nape action, that cross-body arm hold. flawless execution.

thirdly, after 900 years of sleeps how fitting is it that the spoon is their go-to like i love that for them because it’s all about protection and trust with a splash of sexy and honestly good for them
